Preparing Your RV for Long-Term Storage
Whether you’re parking it for the off-season or stepping away for a few months, preparing your RV for long-term storage is essential to protect your investment and avoid costly repairs down the road. With a few key steps—like proper cleaning, draining, and pest prevention—you’ll keep your RV road-ready and problem-free when it’s time to travel again.
Why RV Storage Prep Is Crucial
Your RV is more than just a vehicle—it’s a home on wheels. And like any home or car, it needs care and attention when left idle. Long-term storage without proper prep can lead to mold, pests, battery drain, fuel issues, and even roof leaks. A few hours of preparation now can save you hundreds—or even thousands—later.
Clean the Interior and Exterior
Start with a thorough cleaning inside and out. Remove any food crumbs, open containers, or perishable items that could attract pests or create odors. Wipe down all surfaces, vacuum carpets and upholstery, and open drawers and cabinets to ensure everything is emptied. On the exterior, wash off dirt, sap, and bugs to avoid paint damage. Cleaning the outside also helps you spot any cracks, seal failures, or damage that should be addressed before storage.
Drain and Winterize Water Systems
If you’ll be storing your RV through colder months or for an extended time, you’ll need to drain and winterize the water system. Leftover water in your pipes, tanks, or heater can freeze and expand—leading to cracks and costly repairs. Drain all freshwater, gray, and black tanks. Use RV antifreeze to protect your lines and water heater if you're expecting freezing temperatures. Even in Florida, moisture buildup in stagnant water systems can lead to bacteria or mold.
Power Down: Battery and Electrical Systems
Battery storage is a major concern in long-term RV parking. Disconnect the battery to avoid parasitic drain from small electronics, or consider using a battery tender to keep it trickle-charged during storage. For solar setups, shut down the system unless you’re using it to maintain your battery charge. ...
